(January 4, 2014) – Heritage High School senior Kayla Tibbs has committed to further her basketball career at Glenville State College starting in the 2014-2015 school year.
“I really like the atmosphere at Glenville State, most importantly; the coaches. I feel comfortable,” said the 5-foot-9 Tibbs.
Tibbs – who has been a member of the Pride’s varsity basketball program since freshmen year – has carried Heritage through its highs and lows over the past four seasons. Unfortunately, the Pride have hit a rough patch, starting their 2013-2014 season 3-8.
The Leesburg-native says not to count her team out just yet, as Tibbs, the sole senior on the Pride’s team, plans on returning to the region tournament again this year.
“We are a young team. We have girls who are still learning the game of basketball,” said Tibbs who plays travel basketball with Broad Run High School senior Taylor Tashjian and the Axiom Elite. “We have the potential, but have fell short in games we should win.”
On the other hand, the Division II Glenville State Pioneers, who have only five underclassmen are their roster, started their season on fire at 9-1 including riding a 7-game winning streak. Tibbs – who was named to the Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun 2012-13 All-Loudoun Girls Basketball Team – hopes her all around hustle will help her get regular playing time her freshmen year.
“With eight players leaving at the end of this season, I have to step up and really take my game to the next level too be as great as I want to be,” said Tibbs who will play guard for the Pioneers.
Tibbs will continue to push herself throughout her senior year, but says much of her motivation comes from her mom and stepdad.
“I really love the game of basketball,” Tibbs said. “I started playing the game of basketball on my own in the fourth grade and have been going non-stop ever since.”
