Leesburg, Va. (August 22, 2014)- As the Pride look to have a strong fall sports season, here are the five varsity teams they will field: football, volleyball, golf and boys and girls cross country.
The Pride Football team is looking to avenge last season’s 3-7 record and build off its final two games of last season, where they beat John Champe and Loudoun County. The Pride Volleyball team is looking forward to building off last season. The Pride Golf team is hopeful for a great season thanks to their very young team and the Pride Boys and Girls Cross Country teams expect another strong season from their great group of runners.
The Pride Football team is coached by Reed Prosser (this is his second season at the helm of the football program), and assisted by Russ Bolden, Chris Tibbs, Kenny Weaver, Sam Carpenter, and former NFL tight end, Robert Royal. As they look to build off their huge win over Loudoun County last season (21-7), they return eight players on offense and seven players on defense. They also return All-Region Punter Garrett Smith, who also plays wide receiver and defensive back.
“Our best players will be Daniel Adigun #44 LB/RB, Mitch Westbrook #3 FS/RB, QB Cameron Knight #1, Cole Miller #2 WR and Tyler Daily #7 LB/TE. Basketball player Nick Winslow has looked great on the D-line so far. He is a senior and a true surprise and will have a great year. Also our new kicker is a soccer player, Andres Villalon,” Coach Prosser said. “We have greatly improved from last season and the kids understand what is being asked of them scheme wise and effort wise.
The Pride Volleyball team is coached by Allison Smith and assisted by Nicole Barnes. They look to have a great season with six varsity players returning: M/OH Claire Lydon, OH/RS Maddy Emerald, OH Peyton Hersey, S Brittany Crammer, and MH/RS Skyla Richardson. Three players who moved up from JV include M/RS Brittany Johnston, S Jordan Weitzel, OH/RS Natalie Tucker, and DS/L Madison Eudy, They also have one player who made the big move from freshman last season, MH/OH Regan Alex.
“Heritage Volleyball is a team that is blossoming into its own with a solid offense and even more solid defense. I’m looking forward to taking on lots of great competition throughout the upcoming season and into postseason,” Coach Smith said. “Standouts would be our seniors Claire Lydon and Maddy Emerald, juniors Peyton Hersey and Brittany Crammer. Also our sophomores Skyla Richardson, Regan Alex and Madison Eudy should have a big part this season.”
The Pride Golf team is coached by Matthew Swartz, in his second season at the helm of the team. The team is built on a strong foundation of great, young golfers. They have one of the top incoming freshman in the county too, Nick Rentsch.
The roster for the team includes:
- Nick Rentsch, freshman
- Eli Newman, sophomore
- Garrett Ganley, sophomore
- Bryce Rodgers, sophomore
- Josh Petrillo, sophomore
- Timmy Hannon, sophomore
- Cullen Dancer, sophomore
- Tyler Judd, sophomore
- Jacob Laura, junior
- JP Aulbach, junior
“I expect sophomore team captain Eli Newman, who recently finished runner-up shooting 69 in the Loudoun Junior Championships, to standout this season.” Coach Swartz said. “Also look for good things from JP Aulbach and Garrett Ganley.”
The Pride Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are coached by Douglas Gilbert and Nancy Merriman. The Pride boys look to be much improved this cross country season, led by regional qualifier Brendan Thompson and seniors Jack Zelman and Joey Lightbody. The Pride girls look to have a strong group with juniors Georgie Mackenzie, Sarah Smith, Megan Collins and Taylor Zelman (injured 2013 season).
“We have a large squad of 53 boys and have boosted our workload in order to move up from last year’s 6th place Conference 21 finish,” said Coach Gilbert. “Georgie [Mackenzie] returns this season from a great post season (All-State and 18:34 at Foot Locker South), but they all have been counting down the days from last year in order to have a shot to move deeper into the post season.”
