(November 29, 2013) – Heritage High School senior Sydney Busa signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her volleyball career at Elon University next fall.
“I love knowing where I will be going in a year. I am so happy with my decision, and I know that it is the right school for me,” the 6-foot-1 Busa said. “Two summers ago, I went to camp there. I loved the atmosphere of the school and the atmosphere of the volleyball program. The school had everything I wanted, in terms of academics, size, location.”
The volleyball side of the university provides Busa with an opportunity to play a Division I sport for the Elon Phoenix.
In 2013, the Phoenix finished the season 16-17 overall, 7-9 in the Southern Conference before dropping their final match of the season in the conference quarterfinal.
“The coaches have told me how they see me being a versatile player on the team,” said Busa who also plays volleyball for Virginia Elite. “I want to go there and work on my leadership and becoming a true leader one the court.”
Busa first stepped on to the quarter because of her height. Volleyball parents from around town encouraged Busa to play knowing she would gain valuable experience from playing one of Northern Virginia’s most popular high school sports.
“I first started playing because I was tall. Mrs. Melanie Fowler and Dr. Robert Strange really encouraged me to start playing in middle school,” said Busa who was named to the first team in the 4A North Region, Conference 21 and the Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun All-Loudoun Team in 2012-2013. “When I first started playing, I fell in love with the sport.
“I had a natural feel for the game, and it has helped me develop a passion for the sport. I couldn’t imagine my life without volleyball. It has given me so many opportunities that I am so thankful for.”
