South Riding, VA (February 1, 2017) – Freedom’s Sydney Wrighte claimed 1st place honors on bars (9.75), beam (9.875), vault (9.75), floor (9.85), and of course, the all-around (39.225); but it wasn’t enough for her squad to top the Woodgrove Wolverines for first place team honors at the Conference 21 West Girls Gymnastics Championship on Monday, Jan. 30.
The Wolverines (140.3) outscored the VHSL defending state champion Freedom Eagles (139.475), by 0.825 points to claim gold medal honors. Other teams in Conference 21 West include Broadway, Harrisonburg, John Champe, Spotswood and Turner Ashby.
The Wolverines now advances to the North Region 5A/4A Championship, which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Park View High School, beginning at 5:00 p.m. There they will again face the 21 West conference runner-up Freedom, as well the first and second place teams from Regions 13, 14, 15 and 21 East.
The top eight gymnasts in each event at conferences qualified to compete as individuals at the regional championship. Four Wolverines will be competing as individuals: sophomore River Stone, who placed 2nd on vault, bars and beam, 3rd on floor, and 2nd all-around; senior Sarah Snare, who placed 4th on vault and floor, 5th on beam, tied for 3rd on bars, and placed 3rd all-around; freshman Jodi Snare, who placed 3rd on vault and 8th on bars; and freshman Erin Keane, who placed 4th on beam and 7th on beam.
Virginia state championships will be held at Patriot High School in Nokesville on Friday, Feb. 17, for team competition, and Saturday, Feb. 18, for individual events.
