Leesburg, VA (March 16, 2017) – APEX Gymnastics is pleased to honor Claudia Cardona as their Senior Spotlight Gymnast for the month of March.
How many years have you been at APEX: 11
Favorite memory from your years at APEX: My favorite memory at APEX was when I proposed to my old coach, Jacob, when I was 9 years old. The man thought I was really weird and so did my teammates after that, but it was a really funny experience that taught me what was okay to say to a coach and what was not. Also, my other favorite memories are talking to my coach, Luda, after we’re done with our beam workout and hearing her tell us how much harder her life as a gymnast was compared to ours. I also love listening to country music on bars and singing along in my head as I swing.
Your Favorite Meet: My favorite meet was the Jazz Invitational in New Orleans because the environment was so different there and I got to play with my teammates all the time. Most of my teammates were just happy to be in New Orleans that none of us were really nervous for the meet.
Which skill was the toughest for you to learn? Anything on vault ever
What do you have planned for the future? I am going to major in engineering at Virginia Tech. I’m not sure what type of engineering I want to do, but I want to do something to protect the environment and more specifically, the ocean. I want to start new club sports at Virginia Tech like soccer, I won’t be very good but I just want to try something new. I also might do club gymnastics at Tech.
Do you have any words of advice for younger gymnasts? Always show up to practice; if you’re tired or have a lot of homework, don’t skip it. It will teach you in the long run how to time-manage and how to push through things even when you don’t want to. Also, don’t take the sport for granted because it will teach you many things and help you form bonds with all types of wonderful people. Always have a good attitude at practice even if you’ve had a bad day because then you can laugh with your teammates and have a great time.
