(June 3, 2013) – There was a time when the Loudoun Valley High School girls lacrosse team had trouble breaking into the LoCo Top 5 poll, but as the seasons starts its final week the Vikings are the last local girls team standing, having knocked off Northwest Sectional champion Battlefield, 13-9, on Friday to advance to the VHSL state tournament semifinals.
The Vikings were led Friday by junior Corley Simons with six goals, who was key on draw control. Junior Ashly DiLoreto had two scores and an assist and senior Megan Williamson added two goals. Also scoring for the Vikes were junior Courtney Schollian, sophomore Maya Ebrhimnejad and sophomore Samantha Mendiguren.
Loudoun Valley goalie, sophomore Haley Shuford had nine saves.
The Vikings controlled the pace of play, especially in the first half, as they denied Battlefield an offensive possession for an 11+ minute stretch and built a 10-5 advantage by the break.
