Middleburg (Oct. 1, 2013) – The Foxcroft School field hockey team, which reached the state championship game a year ago, has taken over the No. 1 ranking among Division II schools in the latest Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association rankings, based on games through Sept. 24. Meanwhile, the school’s tennis team – a state semifinalist in 2012, is ranked No. 5 in the state through games of Sept. 17.
Under the direction of Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff, Foxcroft field hockey has a perfect 5-0 and has already defeated two other ranked teams, Fredericksburg Academy (No. 3) and Carlisle (No. 5) by scores of 2-1 and 1-0, respectively.
Foxcroft’s team is led by sophomore forward Alex Grace of Purcellville, senior midfielder Lilly MacDonald (Bluemont) and senior goalkeeper Alicia Holz (Delaplane). Grace leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and one assist for 21 points while MacDonald, an all-state selection a year ago, has scored four goals for eight points.
Holz, also an all-state selection in 2012, has posted three shutouts in five games and has allowed only two goals so far this season.
The tennis team, which reached the semifinals of the state tournament last season, is paced by All-State returnees Annie Mickum, a sophomore from The Plains, and Kelly Buckland, a senior from Alexandria, as well as senior Amalia Simpson (Newtown Square, PA) and sophomore Marina Shallcross (Upperville).
