Middleburg, VA (September 17, 2015) – Led by a group of local girls, Foxcroft School’s field hockey, tennis and cross country teams scored impressive victories on Tuesday, September 15, to set the tone for what could be excellent seasons for all three squads.
Sisters Haley and Allison Buffenbarger of Leesburg led the way in Foxcroft’s 8-0 field hockey triumph over Madeira, senior captains Annie Mickum (The Plains) and Marina Shallcross (Upperville) scored easy victories in the tennis team’s 6-1 victory over Wakefield School, and Alex Grace, a senior from Purcellville, won a 5K cross country race to lead her team to a first-place finish in a Delaney Athletic Conference meet at St. Michael’s.
Six different players, including the Buffenbarger sisters, scored as Foxcroft ran its record to 4-0 with a victory a Foxcroft. Haley, a freshman, had two more goals, giving her six in the last two games, and Allison, a junior, had a goal and five assists. Freshman Loren Sepulveda (Middleburg) also scored twice for Foxcroft, which beat Madeira for the fourth consecutive year. Goalkeepers Elle Lassiter (Round Hill) and Jessie Herman ‘16 (Waterford) were not even tested by Madeira.
Foxcroft won its third consecutive match by defeating Wakefield School in The Plains. Foxcroft won all
five singles matches to lock up the victory before the doubles matches were completed. Mickum and Shallcross, Foxcroft’s two returning all-state players, won their matches by 8-0 scores. Wakefield is in the beginning of a rebuilding year and fields a team of five freshmen, some of whom are relatively new to the sport.
