Ashburn, Va. (October 25, 2014) – The Woodgrove Wolverines defeated the Dominion Titans last night, 35 to 28, in a game at Dominion.
Scotty Forbes led the Titans with 12 of 22 passing for 161 yards and 2 TD’s. He also added two rushing TD’s as well. Woodgrove’s Billy Sheehan was 14 for 25 passing with 178 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He also had a rushing TD. Charlie Clewis pounded out 42 rushes for 155 yards and 3 TD’s.
The game opened with Woodgrove receiving the ball, but they were forced to punt after a 3 & out. Scotty Forbes, starting on his own 32 yard line, lofted a 38-yard pass to Derick Koumae on Dominion’s first play. However, Woodgrove’s defense stiffened after a quick time out and the Wolverines followed up their poor start with a stop of a swing pass for a one yard loss and then a sack that forced Dominion to punt.
Woodgrove started the next series with the ball on their own 34 yard line. After three successive running plays moved the ball to the Woodgrove 30-yard line, Billy Sheehan tossed a 22 yard pass to Dylan Mellor to move the ball to mid-field. A Dominion defensive time-out failed to stem the tide, and Woodgrove patiently moved the ball down the field until Charlie Clewis capped off the 18 play 96 –yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge and a 7-0 lead.
Dominion‘s offense was still not clicking at this point, as their next drive was a 3 & out that only moved the ball 1 yard. For awhile, it looked like Dominion’s defense was also not in gear, as Woodgrove drove the ball to Dominion’s 33-yard line. However, on the next play, the defense found the clutch and Dominion’s Bradden Ruffin picked off a Billy Sheehan pass and ran it back 19-yards. Woodgrove, not happy about the play, got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct to move the ball to mid-field.
Dominion’s offense was still misfiring at this point and they had to punt after another 3 & out. Dominion’s defense picked up where they left off in the last series and stopped Woodgrove’s next possession, forcing a punt by Woodgrove. Dominion’s offense finally found its footing and executed on a 10-play 65-yard drive to tie the score 7-7. Scotty Forbes finished off the drive with a one yard TD dive. Dominion then went ahead 14-7 on their next series with a 75 yard 9 play drive right before half-time. Scotty Forbes tossed a 15 yard TD pass to Matt Griciski for the score.
Dominion then started with the ball in the second half. The Titan’s staked out a 21-7 lead on the back of too long runs by Brandon Ruffin totaling 42 yards and another 18 yard run by QB Scotty Forbes. Scotty then finished off the 9 play drive with a 1 yard dive and his second TD of the day.
Woodgrove closed the gap to 21-14 with their own answer, a 13 play 68 yard drive and a Billy Sheehan 1 yard plunge. Woodgrove followed the TD with a perfectly executed onside kick that caught the Titan’s napping. The adrenalin from that play carried over to the offense, who marched the remaining 53 –yards in 8 plays, pulling even at 21-21 when Charlie Clewis rushed for a 12-yard score.
Woodgrove’s defense, having just watched special teams and offense step up decided it was their turn now and forced an incompletion, then stuffed a Billy Walker run for a 3-yard loss and followed that up with a sack of Scotty Forbes for a 12-yard loss. Dominion, faced with a 4th and 25 from their own 15 yard line were forced to punt.
After a 39-yard punt and a 9-yard return, Dominion started their drive on Dominion’s 36-yard line. After three Charlie Clewis rushes moved the ball to the 26-yard line, Woodgrove QB Billy Sheehan tossed a 26 yard pass to Dylan Mellor for the 28-21 lead.
Scotty Forbes and the Titan’s weren’t finished though. Starting with the ball on their own 22-yard line, the Titan’s marched down the field in polished manner, mixing rushes and passes to tie the game 28-28. The Titan drive was aided by a Woodgrove pass interference penalty that turned a 4th and 9 play into 1st and 10, midway through the drive. Scotty Forbes finished off the drive with a 14 yard pass to Luke Thompson for his second passing TD.
Dominion got a chance to win the game by stopping Woodgrove on the next series. However, the Titan’s offense went cold and they were not able to move the ball after receiving the Woodgrove punt on their own 32.
Woodgrove then started their winning drive on their own 42-yard line. Charlie Clewis then moved the ball 19 yards on 4 successive rushes. Then, after a Dominion time-out, Billy Sheehan tosses a 12 yard spass to Dylan Mellor for a first down on Dominion’s 18-yard line. After another Clewis rush, moved the ball to the Titan 15 yard line, a fall start by the Wolverines set up a 2nd and 12 at the Titan 20. After a Sheehan ball missed Mellor, Sheehan again lined up at the Titan 20 with 3rd & 12.
Sheehan dropped back, and flung his pass towards Matt Whalen who missed the reception-but Tucker Strychar was called for a personal foul that gave Woodgrove a new set of downs on the Titan 10 yard line. Two rushes by Woodgrove’s Powerhouse RB Charlie Clewis was all it took and the Wolverines went ahead 35-28. After the kick-off, there was only time for two more plays, and Woodgrove were able to come away with the victory.
