Ashburn, Va. (October 15, 2015) — Seven weeks ago, if you had told us that come Week 8, we’d be covering the Wolverines of Woodgrove High School versus the Pride of Heritage High School as the Viva Loudoun Top Ticket Of The Week, I’m not sure we would have believed you.
We’re believers now. This Woodgrove-at-Heritage tilt figures to be a monster matchup between two gridiron foes with legitimate potential to win even beyond the regular season. Only one of these two rampantly prolific squads, of course, can come away with this one…and personally, I can’t wait to find out who.
The Pride (6-0, 28.00 powerpoints for No. 4 in 4A West) is simply scalding hot right now. The Evergreen Mill boys are absolutely decimating opponents with an outrageously potent offense led by junior quarterback Alex Carlin, whose forward passes are among the prettiest you’ll find anywhere around. His favorite moving target is senior wide receiver Cole Miller, who possesses turf-burning speed and a couple handfuls of TDs.
Other than a 21-6 win over Fauquier in Week 2, Heritage has rung up between 41 and 55 points every time they’ve played a football game this fall. Heritage head coach Reed Prosser, in his third year leading the Pride, has done a masterful job in turning an also-ran program into a serious threat to contend.
The Wolverines (5-1, 26.00 powerpoints for No. 7 in 4A West) are always a solid program under veteran head coach Mike Skinner. Besides a season-opening three-point setback to John Champe (who, by the way, hasn’t lost yet either), Woodgrove has won its last five contests by an average score of 43.6-10.4. It hasn’t been all big wins and blowouts: The Wolverines were tested (and passed) on a 31-28 double-overtime decision over Millbrook three weeks ago.
Woodgrove features a three-headed offensive monster in quarterback Mike Kovich, wideout Mason Gryniuk and running back Charlie Clewis, who’s good for 100 rushing yards week in and week out.
This will be the only regular-season meeting between Heritage and Woodgrove, of course, but it may not be the last they see of each other this year. Tune in for this possible playoff preview. It’s the Heritage Pride roaring and ready to go against the tenacious Woodgrove Wolverines, and it’s deservingly our Top Ticket Of The Week. Stay on top of the action @VivaLoudoun.
