Ashburn, Va. (September 8, 2016) — Like the late, great Yogi Berra would say, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”
Right you are, Yogi. That’s exactly the feeling we’re getting as we get ready for Week 3’s Viva Loudoun TopTicket Of The Week: Another early-season showdown between the undefeated Pride of Heritage High School and the equally unblemished Vikings of Loudoun Valley High School, in an eerily similar rematch of last year’s barnburning shootout between unbeatens.
Almost exactly one year ago to the day, Viva Loudoun traveled to the Vikings’ hideout in Purcellville to witness 2-0 Heritage squaring off against 2-0 Valley – and the upstart Pride pulled off a 41-35 victory (six touchdowns to five), as quarterbacks Alex Carlin and Nick Kallivokas took to the airwaves to spread some scores around. (Relive the pics, stats and story here.)
So here we are again, one year later. And here they are again, these two high-flying gridiron squadrons with the same QBs and the same 2-0 records. So here we come – again – with the all-out Viva Loudoun TopTicket coverage. Just like déjà vu…again.
We’re pretty sure of one thing about this heavyweight Conference 21-B matchup: There will be points. There could be a lot of points. It might resemble arena football, high school style – just like last year’s tilt did.
Carlin, the conference’s reigning Offensive Player of the Year, is back with an impressive set of senior weapons. He’s led the Pride to a 55-19 cumulative score over their first two contests, relying on D.J. Hutcherson‘s speed at wideout, John Wooden‘s toughness at fullback and the trench skills of offensive linemen Kyle Turner, Damian Moo and Tyler Hatt.
Kallivokas is hardly bereft of assistance himself. The Viking signal-caller has the very fast Duron Norris on the outside and a triumvirate of running backs led by Tyler Hunt. That unit has amassed points like a pinball machine, to the tune of 105-61 over their first two.
Can the Vikings find enough defense to keep the Pride at bay? Will Heritage, in front of its home fans, light up the scoreboard on their guests? Might we see more than the 11 TDs we were treated to last year?
The potent offenses of the Pride and the Vikings, putting up points like they’re saving them for winter. Like we said: Déjà vu. Come experience it with us as our VivaLoudoun’s TopTicket Of The Week. We’ll be live-tweeting the proceedings on Twitter @VivaLoudoun.
