Aldie, Va. (August 26, 2015) — We’re hitting the ground running with a huge Group 4A clash when the Woodgrove Wolverines from Loudoun’s West take a trip to Loudoun’s South to face the John Champe Knights in the VivaLoudoun TopTicket Of The Week.
One team lost just once last year; the other team lost just twice. Both teams won 11 times. Both programs are known for hard-nosed, disciplined football, and both are back with a healthy mix of old and new.
The Knights’ trajectory in just their fifth varsity campaign has bee remarkable, from 0-10 to 10-0. They return linebacker Mikey O’Connell to anchor a young defense, and they have all-conference linemen E.J. Boldin and Jack Granahan to stabilize a young offensive line, protecting new quarterback Cameron Parson. What Champe’s dynamic, multiple offense of a year ago evolves into this year is a highly intriguing question.
At age 7, Woodgrove’s program isn’t much older than Champe but has established a pedigree just the same. They’ve become a perennial playoff team, and look to continue that trend with returning quarterback Mike Kovich at the helm. Kovich won Offensive Player of the Year honors for Conference 21B thanks in large part to speedy wideout Mason Gryniuk catching and running with his passes. Chima Kpaduwa and Johann Wunder are home-run threats in the Wolverines’ backfield.
You usually don’t get showdowns this big until season. We’ve got this huge clash, and it’s only Week One. It’s Champe versus Woodgrove for a 4A measuring stick, and we’ll be there to show-and-tell you all about it in VivaLoudoun’s Top Ticket Of The Week. Stay on top of the action on Twitter @VivaLoudoun.
