Falls Church, Va. (October 17, 2014) – The Stone Bridge Bulldogs romped over the Marshall Statesmen 54-7 on road win Friday night, 54-7. The Bulldogs had six rushing touchdowns and led 41-0 at half-time in the lopsided contest. The win improves Stone Bridge’s record to 5-2 and Marshall is now 2-5.
The Bulldogs got things off to a slow start as after they received the opening kick-off and their first drive stalled after 3 plays and they were forced to punt. After that, the Bulldogs were off to the races as on the ensuing Marshall possession, LeMaster picked off a pass attempt by Marshall and he returned it 31 yards to the 6 yard line. Tanner Karafa punched it in from there for a 7-0 lead.
After a 3 & out by the Statesmen, Stone Bridge started on their 35 yard-line and drove the ball to Marshall’s 27 yard line before a pass was picked off and returned to midfield. The two teams then trades punts before Stone Bridge then started with the ball on their 13-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Joe Thompson completed a pass to Collin Buckley who rambled on for an 87-yard score. The extra point was good for a 14-0 lead.
After another Marshall drive stalled after 4 plays, the Bulldogs received an 18-yard punt and returned it 19-yards. After holding penalty pushed the Bulldogs back to Marshall’s 25-yard line, Thompson flipped another TD pass on the next play to Chance Frye. After the extra point was blocked, the Bulldogs led 20-0. The first quarter was finally over for Marshall.
After another Marshall drive stalled after 6 plays, the Bulldogs took over at mid-field and started off with three successive pass plays that drove the ball to the Marshall 9-yard line. After that, the running game took over and Tanner Karafa finished off the drive with a 2-yard plunge and a 27-0 lead.
During the second quarter, after another 3 & out by Marshall, Stone Bride executed on a 7-play 58 yard drive that was finished off with a 22-yard dash by Collin Buckley and his second TD of the game. After the kick it was 34-0.
After another three and out by Marshall, Stone Bridge executed on a 4-play 57-yard drive that was punctuated by a 60-yard TD pass from Joe Thompson to Nathan Gorman for a 41-0 second quarter lead.
From there Stone Bridge backed off the accelerator and added only two more TD’s in the second half- a 2-yard TD dive by Jefferson and a 9-yard run by Cameron Hunter. Jefferson’s TD came after a Tanner Karafa Interception was returned 50 yards to the Marshall 1 yard line. Marshall’s J Hurlburt finished off the scoring with a 2-yard TD dive.
Stone Bridge’s next game is Friday, October 24, at South Lakes High.
