Ashburn, VA (August 10, 2016) – The Washington Redskins kick off their 2016 campaign this Thursday, August 11 as the team travels from Richmond to Atlanta to face the Falcons at 7:00pm in the Georgia Dome.
“We’re going to get everybody some reps in the game that are traveling and making the trip.” Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said, “Once the game gets started then I’ll make my determination on who to take out and when to take them out. That’ll be solely my decision, and we’ll go from there.”
The only Redskins ruled out of playing so far are tight end Jordan Reed and wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Reggie Diggs. Tackle Trent Williams will be a game time decision according to Gruden.
This is the first training camp in Gruden’s career that does not feature another NFL team sharing practice sessions with the team. Last year the Houston Texans visited Richmond and shared joint practices with the Redskins and the New England Patriots were in Richmond in 2014.
“Were trying to get as many reps out there as possible for the young guys.” Gruden said, “Without having another team come in here it’s a little more difficult. That’s why the pre-season games are going to be more important for us.”
The Redskins have faced the Falcons 15 times in the preseason holding a 10-5 record. The last preseason game between the two clubs was a 27-0 victory by the Redskins in 2004.
The teams have faced each other 25 times in the regular season with the Redskins holding a 15-9-1 edge. The Falcons defeated the Redskins last season in a thrilling 25-19 overtime loss.
The game will be televised by CSN-Mid Atlantic / NBC4 and on COZI (4.2). With Chick Hernandez on play by play, Joe Theismann doing color, and Clinton Portis will be reporting from the sidelines.
The game will also be on the Redskins Radio Network with Larry Michael on play by play, Sonny Jurgensen doing color, Chris Cooley on analysis, and Rick “Doc” Walker will be reporting from the sidelines.
