Ashburn, VA (November 20, 2016) – Potomac Falls used a balanced rushing attack and stout defense to pitch a 22-0 shutout against the Albemarle Patriots in the second round of the 5A North playoffs on Friday, November 18th.
The Panthers took advantage of a partially blocked punt and a short field on their second possession, as RB Jad Raqi split the Patriot secondary for a 39-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Potomac Falls added to its lead in the second quarter, as RB Kash Jackson capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Jackson added a two-point conversion run to make the score 15-0.
Albemarle looked to change momentum late in the second quarter, when Patriot DB Na’il Arnold intercepted a ball intended for Panther WR Kaevon Chase near the goal line and returned it to the Potomac Falls 35. The Patriots drove to the one-yard line with under a minute to play, but a Potomac Falls goal line stand kept them scoreless going into the break.
The Patriots could do little against Potomac Falls’ defense in the second half, running only four plays in Panther territory and ending the game with less than 100 yards of offense. LB Grant Misch led the Panther defensive effort with 8 tackles and a sack, and DB Alex Nemer pitched in with 5.5 tackles, including a couple to save potentially big plays.
Potomac Falls drove the ball on offense in the third quarter but could not convert. In the final quarter, the Panthers took advantage of another short field to mount a seven-play, 45-yard drive that ended in a 2-yard touchdown by RB Clemont Mpanya, providing the game’s final margin.
The win takes the Panthers to 10-2 on the season. Potomac Falls next will travel to face the top-seeded Massaponax Panthers in a 5A North third round playoff game on Friday, November 25th.
