Ashburn, VA (November 22, 2014) In a rematch of last year’s thrilling, double over time game, the Broad Run Spartans defeated their cross-town rival 17-15. The victory avenged last year’s heartbreaking 37-14 lost. The Spartans will travel to Leesburg next week to face the Tuscarora Huskies in the 5A North semifinals.
The Spartans got off to a slow start, fumbling the ball on their first possession and falling behind 6-0 after Falcon QB Jake Maffe lofted a 30-yard TD pass to Tristan Carter on their first possession. The Falcons then tacked on a 33-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead.
Broad Run finally got things going and closed the gap to 9-6 when Clyde Bryson broke through for a 17-yard TD score. The Spartans then took the lead 14-9 on QB Brady Reitzels TD pass. A Spartan field goal as time expired put them up 17-9 at half time.
The score remained the same until late in the fourth quarter when the Falcon Maffe brothers alternatively ran the ball down the field. Jake Maffe then capped off the drive when he completed a 4-yard pass to Mark Bingham for a TD. The Broad Run fans pulse quickened when the Falcons scored a game tying two-point conversion, but they were elated to see a yellow flag floating to the field. The Falcons were penalized for an illegal procedure and had to try again from 7-yards out. This attempt failed as a pass attempt to the end zone corner was batted away by Marcel Mingo to secure the victory.
