Springfield, VA (October 3, 2016) – The Briar Woods Falcons travelled to Springfield and defeated the Robert E. Lee Lancers by the score 49-20 in a Region 5A North football match-up on Friday, September 30th.
On the first play of the game, Falcons’ all-purpose offensive threat Ben Maffe took the opening kickoff and returned the ball 83-yards to the Lancers’ 7-yard line. One play later quarterback Skylar Springs juked his way into the end zone. Kicker Edgar Moreno then connected on the first of seven successful extra point tries to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. From there, things only got worse for the Lancers. On the R.E. Lee’s fourth play from scrimmage, Falcons’ linebacker Adrian Rezk caused and recovered a fumble on the Lancer 36. Two plays later, running back Julian Posas closed out the drive with a 29-yard touchdown run, increasing the Falcon’s lead to 14-0 less than three minutes into the game.
On the next Lancer possession Falcons defensive back Danny McMinn intercepted a pass to set up 1st and 10 on the Lancer 40. Sophomore RB Camden Gillie then entered the game and proceeded to carry the ball five straight times, the last carry of which was a two yard touchdown run.
Briar Woods’ rushing attack was hitting on all cylinders throughout the game. In his first varsity appearance, Gillie ran for 163 yards on 15 carries, Posas added 70 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Springs gained 67 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. In all, the Falcons racked up 372 yards via the running game.
Directly after the Falcons’ third touchdown, Lancer kick returner Kevin Hamilton took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the score. Maffe however, responded in kind and returned the Lancers’ kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown of his own. After 35-points were scored in the first 8:38 of the game, there were no more changes to the scoreboard in the half.
On their first possession of the second half, Falcon’s QB Jalen Thomas led the team on a seven play, 49-yard touchdown drive. Posas gained 18 yards on two carries, Gillie gained 23 yards on two carries; Thomas ran for 12, then hit Kevin Larco for a on a 13-yard TD pass. The Lancers responded with their only sustained drive of the game, going 63 yards on nine plays including QB Kraig Hamilton’s 12-yard touchdown run. The Lancers scored again with two seconds remaining in the game when Hamilton found WR Kaleb Samuel in the back of the end zone for a 26 yard score.
At no time did the Lancers threaten to get back in the game after the first period. The defense held the Lancers to 11 first downs and 194 yards of total offense. LB Riley Garcia led the team with nine tackles, three of which went for a loss. LB Adrian Rezk made eight tackles; one for a loss and collected one fumble recovery.
Maffe crossed the goal line twice in the third quarter from 15 and 14-yards, both on the jet sweep. The Lancers had no answer for him. He gained 40 yards on six carries, returned two kickoffs for 167 yards and one touchdown, and caught one pass for 12 yards. He also played much of the game at the safety position, making two tackles and breaking up two pass attempts.
The win propelled Briar Woods’ record to 2-4. Next Friday the Falcons host 2015 6A state champion Westfield for their final home game of the season.
