Ashburn, Va. (November 25, 2016) — Yet another thing we can give thanks for this week is a tremendous all-Loudoun deep-playoff showdown.
The Wolverines have done nothing but win all year. The Titans have been winning since a 24-14 setback to the Wolverines, back 10 games ago. The table is set for this second meeting, a Thanksgiving Friday affair to decide who wins Region 4A West and who makes the final four for the Group 4A state championship.
The Titans of Dominion High School have earned this late playoff date, thanks to a crop of talented seniors hitting their strides. They boast Conference 21B’s Offensive Player of the Year in quarterback Vashon McCants, and its Defensive PotY in lineman Tommy Christ. Linebacker Kyle Smith and end Billie Walker help anchor the defense, while WR Jayson Robinson is a speed merchant on the outside.
Under veteran head coach Karl Buckwalter, Dominion is playing past its “birthday” for the first time in, really, ever. Buckwalter considers his team’s birthday to be the day after the previous season ended; considering the Titans are going the farthest they’ve ever gone in the playoffs, it’s a happy birthday so far for the kids from around Sterling.
But the kids from around Purcellville are having a pretty dang good time too, under equally veteran head coach Mike Skinner. The Wolverines of Woodgrove High School put together a 10-0 campaign for the first time, and is looking to wear its first region crown. It too is a senior-packed bunch getting the job done, from dual-threat quarterback Mike Kovich to speedy route-runner Mason Gryniuk and power running back Chima Kpaduwa, from all-conference DE Aaron Fitzwater to all-conference linebackers Zach Stanley and Kevin Burke.
The Wolverines are coming off a 57-8 shellacking of Charlottesville; the Titans just put a 42-21 beatdown on Amherst. The victor from Dominion-vs-Woodgrove will face the winner of the grudge-match between defending Group 4A champ Salem (10-1) and its Roanoke-area rival William Byrd (10-1). But that victor must pass this test first.
As west meets east, we gather around Woodgrove’s gridiron for a Loudoun football feast. Stay on top of all the big plays by all the key players for this Viva Loudoun TopTicket Of The Week local special as we live-tweet @VivaLoudoun.
