Ashburn, Va. (November 12, 2015) — Sometimes the Road To The Championship runs right through your neighbor’s yard.
That’s the case for our first playoff edition of the Viva Loudoun Top Ticket Of The Week, when the Falcons of Briar Woods High School invade the nearby territory of the Spartans of Broad Run High School.
There are all sorts of ways to get from B-Woods to B-Run: Claiborne, Belmont Ridge, Waxpool if you prefer the scenic route…but they’ll be going in droves for this post-starting rivalry tilt. It could be an upset, but maybe not, no matter who wins.
Briar Woods (3-7, 25.4 powerpoints for 13th in 5A North) could. When the two met for our Week 5 Top Ticket in Brambleton Sept. 25, only a late long TD run kept that from being anyone’s game. The reason the Falcons are the only team under five (5) wins in the entire 16-team regional field is because they’ve played a tremendously tough schedule, against other 5As now in the same field, and against 6As now in their own playoffs.
You figure out Broad Run (7-3, 30.3 powerpoints for 4th in 5A North). Started out 6-0 and looked like world champions when we saw them demolish Centreville at Centreville. Then, the Spartans get a chink in the armor with a setback at Stone Bridge, and only an overtime win over Oakton has put them in the win column since. Freshest is a home defeat to Tuscarora where Broad Run was up 14 in the fourth.
What’s it all mean for Friday? Nothing. It’s high school football, so anything’s possible when talented kids who’ve played with and against each other their whole lives go at it in a real live football game, especially with the end of the season for the one with the fewest points.
It’s Friday the 13th, the fortnight after Halloween, and either of these teams can put a scare into anyone. Winner gets winner from Orange County’s visit to Stone Bridge – quite possibly another Ashburn Clash – but we’ve had a ripe one fall right in front of us, so we’re picking up Briar Woods versus Broad Run – the Battle Of the Belmont, the War For Claiborne, the Waxpool Road Rumble – in round one of the 2015 VHSL 5A North playoffs.
State championships are not distant memories for either of these programs, and they’re both 0-0 going into do-or-done mode. Stay on top of the playoff action @VivaLoudoun.
