(Feb. 1, 2014) – The Dominion High School girls and Heritage High School boys swam away with Conference 21 titles on Friday at Claude Moore in Sterling.
The Titan girls overwhelmed the 8-team meet, winning by more than 100 points, scoring 439 with runner-up Heritage at 325 followed by third place Woodgrove (273).
The Pride boys scored 390 with Dominion runner-up (337.5) followed by Loudoun County (276).
Dominion girls, last year’s Dulles District champions, captured all three relays to show their depth with sophomore Rachel Tao, freshman Anna Schlemmer, sophomore Sara Schlemmer and Ashley Brock starting off with a 200 medley relay (1:55.06) victory comprised of a team with no seniors.
Seniors Sam Jakab and Rachel Williams combined with sophomore Amber Shields and Brock for the 200 free relay win (1:43.59) and Jakab, Tao, Sara Schlemmer and Williams ended the night on a perfect note with the 400 free relay win (3:47.05).
The Titans were also on the top of the podium in five of the eight individual events with Williams winning the 200 IM (2:12.43) and 500 free (5:19.40); Tao taking the 100 back (1:03.74); and the Schlemmer sisters winning the 100 fly (Sara in 1:02.36) and 100 breast (Anna in 1:11.42).
Woodgrove sophomore Kacey Hauck won the 200 free in 2:01.74. Sherando senior Kelsey Dingman was the spring queen with wins in the 50 (25.27) and 100 free (56.30).
On the boys side, seniors Tim Burris and Jake Schroth led the way for the Pride with each winning two individual events and helping the Pride take two relay gold.
Burris won the 50 free (22.12) and 100 back (56.75) while Schroth took the 100 fly (54.62) and 100 free (49.95). Teammate , sophomore Phillip Crouch won the 100 breast (1:01.92).
All three combined with freshman Michael Burris to win the 200 medley (1:41.24) and 200 free relays (1:31.60).
Dominion had a good meet led by the Popovich boys with freshman Matthew winning the 200 IM (2:04.68) and J.P. out-lasting the field in the 500 free (4:57.75). They teamed with sophomore Nelson Chen and junior Eric Wong to win the 400 free relay (3:29.51).
James Wood senior Brian Baker broke the Loudoun schools stronghold on the top spots with a first in the 200 free (1:50.96).
Dominion is the host of the 4A North Region swim meet which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at George Mason University’s Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax. Admission is $6 with $2 for the heat sheet at the door.
The top six individuals and top three relays from the Conference 21 automatically move onto the regional meet plus any swimmers or relay teams that has already met the state qualifying standard for 4A. (pdf of complete Conf 21 results)
