Leesburg, VA (July 10, 2016) – Tuscarora graduate Joey Skov has commit to play baseball for UVA-Wise beginning the 2016/2017 academic school year.
“My recruiting experience was easy and manageable, said Skov. After meeting the coaches and visiting the campus, I felt confident that UVA-Wise was the right school for me. The coaches promote success for the players in the classroom and also on the field, and I felt that they want the best college experience possible for their players.”
UVA-Wise is a public, liberal arts college nestled on an expansive 369-acre campus amid the lush Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. UVA-Wise offers students a high-caliber liberal arts education, a prestigious University of Virginia degree, and an idyllic rural learning environment complete with small classes, close-knit communities, and one-on-one faculty attention. With more than 50 student organizations, spirited NCAA athletic programs, and near-daily campus events, its students have many opportunities to get involved, grow as individuals, and discover their passions.
“Going to a smaller school, the quality of education, being able to play baseball with my good friend and Tuscarora teammate, Noah Lacy, and the offer of a scholarship to attend all factored into my decision to commit to UVA-Wise.”
Skov’s head baseball coach will be Hank Banner. Coach Banner, a UVA-Wise alumnus and member of the 1989 and 1990 conference championship teams as a player, will enter his 21st season at the helm of the college’s baseball program in 2017. A year ago, Banner guided the Cavaliers to 20 victories for the first time since 2012 while also claiming his 400th career coaching victory. UVA-Wise has claimed at least 20 wins in seven of the last 10 seasons and has posted two 30 win seasons during that stretch. Under Banner’s direction, student-athletes have set 33 career school records while also establishing 35 single-season school records.
Skov, a 2015 All-Conference and All-Region shortstop, 2015 All-Loudoun Baseball Team Infielder, and Tuscarora baseball’s 2015 Team MVP, has played baseball for 13 years. During that tenure, when asked about his fondest memories on the diamond, Skov shared, “My fondest memories are of the successes and playoff wins that the Huskies had my senior year. The 2016 season was the best in the history of Tuscarora baseball. I will also remember our spring break Myrtle Beach tournaments where we were able to play games and bond as a team.”
“I am thankful of my parents, and also to Coach Bauer and Coach Marinelli for their support, shared Joey, Their support throughout the years have helped me become the athlete and the person that I am today. I am also thankful to my teammates who I was able to enjoy much success with this past spring. The memories we made as a team and as friends will last a lifetime.”
Asked what advice he would give others pursing their dreams, Joey shared, “In terms of recruiting, my advice would be to stay calm and to be patient. If coaches want you, they will put in the effort to have you play at their school.”
Please join us in wishing Joey Skov the very best on the baseball diamond and in the classroom as he pursues a degree in Dental Technology from UVA-Wise.
