(Feb. 6, 2014) – Broad Run High School freshmen Kyle Brickerd has made an early commitment to play collegiate lacrosse for preseason No. 6 Maryland University beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year.
Brickerd is the first student-athlete from the class of 2017 to hit Viva Loudoun’s college choice chart.
“I chose Maryland because when I was on my visits, I liked the atmosphere of the school, the academic support, the coaches and the lacrosse program there,” said the 6-foot Brickerd. “I had a chance to talk with the academic advisor and the head of biology as I hope to pursue an orthodontist career. Meeting with both of them really helped me make my decision.”
Although Brickerd has not played a single possession of high school lacrosse, the NCAA Division I Terrapins saw something special in the young star.
As the No. 6 ranked team heading into the regular season, the Terps will have a target on their back. Maryland will have another tough season playing – in the perennially powerful Atlantic Coast Conference – against eight preseason ranked opponents including four of the top-five teams in No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 5 Notre Dame.
“When I go to Maryland in the fall of 2017, I hope I can be a big asset to the team,” said Brickerd who will play attack or midfield for the Terps. “The coach has talked to me about playing attack and midfield during the season. If I play midfield, this could make the defense struggle as I get to dodge against a short stick instead of going against a 6-foot pole for an attack man.”
Brickerd – who will try out for Broad Run in late February – will have his chance to immediately impact a Spartan team which lost in the VHSL state semifinal last spring after 7-3 in the Cedar Run District.
“This upcoming season for Broad Run lacrosse, I want the team to win our district,” said Brickerd who plays club lacrosse for Blackwolf. “When I’m on the field, I want to become a player who makes assists rather than score a lot of goals.”
