York, Penn. (September 29, 2014) – Sophomore center back Sam Rabinek (Ashburn, Va.) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer on Monday afternoon, after helping the Christopher Newport University Captains post a 5-0 shutout in the league opener versus Wesley College.
Against the Wolverines, Rabinek, a Broad Run High School alumna, and the rest of the CNU defense managed to stimy the attack all day long, and held Wesley without a shot in the 90-minute performance. One of the last players to leave the field, Rabinek logged 83 minutes of action en route to the shutout victory. The second-year starter also took a pair of shots in the contest, putting both on-frame.
Playing in front of two different goalkeepers in the match, Rabinek anchored a back line that ensured that neither rookie Carly Maglio nor sophomore Haley Casanova was pressured with any shot attempts in the game.
It is the second time in her career that Rabinek has been named the CAC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Captains raced out to a big lead against Wesley and coasted to a 5-0 victory in their second all-time meeting. CNU now looks ahead to a road game this weekend, traveling to take on 2013 CAC Champion York College (Pa.) on Saturday, October 4 at noon.
