(January 26, 2014) – Briar Woods High School senior Ryan Lam has committed to continue his basketball career at Guilford College beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year.
“I know that I have a great opportunity ahead of me, and now I can focus on the season and the team winning,” said the 6-foot-3 Lam. “Guilford plays my type of basketball: a very fundamental, half court, slower paced game. The coaches have been there for a long time and have established a winning system. The school, also, has great credentials, and I’ll be able to study the degree I want.”
While Lam plans ahead for the future, he is currently spearheading a Briar Woods’ basketball squad which is 10-5 overall and 2-2 in VHSL Conference 14 after falling to Broad Run High School on the road on Jan. 24.
“I expect us to continue to play as a team and compete for the Conference 14 title,” said Lam who plays travel basketball for Basics 1st AAU. “We have a really good chance with such a balanced team this year, and we have the ability to go far into the playoffs.”
Guilford is well on its way to making the Old Dominion Athletic Conference playoffs sitting at 7-1 in the conference after taking down Eastern Mennonite on Jan. 25. The Division III Quakers are 13-4 overall.
“I’ll add a rebounding presence, and physicality down low, while still providing outside shooting and passing,” said Lam who will play guard for the Quakers.
Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, Guilford is located just 87 miles southeast of where Lam was born in Blacksburg, Virginia. At just six-years old Lam started his basketball journey even while he continued to play soccer at a more competitive level.
“During the summer before freshman year, I switched to full-time basketball,” Lam said. “My motivation was always to try to go to the next level. From the time I switched full time to basketball, I wanted to play in college. And now that I have that opportunity, I’m even more hungry to keep getting better and continue on with basketball.”
