Ashburn, VA (August 11, 2015) – Briar Woods senior Lauren Twitty has committed to play volleyball for the University of New Mexico beginning the 2016-2017 academic school year. Since committing back on February 18th and enjoying the butterflies of excitement the rest of her commitment day, Twitty has continued to work hard all off-season in preparation for her team’s defense of their 2014 VHSL 5A State Championship title.
“The recruiting experience was long and demanding, said Twitty, but I’m glad I waited as long as I did because I got to understand what I wanted and didn’t want in college. Based on the location, academics, volleyball team, and the fact that they offer a sand volleyball program, New Mexico fit all my criteria.”
Founded in 1889 as New Mexico’s flagship institution, the University of New Mexico occupies 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque. Offering a distinctive campus environment with a Pueblo Revival architectural theme, the campus buildings echo nearby Pueblo Indian Villages.
Twitty’s head volleyball coach at UNM will be Jeff Nelson. In nine seasons at the helm, Coach Nelson notched 5 winning seasons, four 20-win seasons, and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Nelson also produced nine American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American selections while at New Mexico.
Asked about her expectations entering her senior year of high school, Twitty replied, “Because of last season’s success, I think that we have a lot to prove this season. Schools are going to want to beat us. If we can motivate each other to work as hard as we can every practice, I think we will do very well. We are expecting some tough teams, but that just gives us more drive to do better. Since last season, my teammates and I have been working really hard in the gym and on the court. Our coaches expect a lot from us and if we came to tryouts out of shape, it would not be pretty. Aside from that, volleyball season is my favorite time of the year because I just love playing with the girls on my team. They are my best friends. And, of course, winning Championships!”
The Falcons, who return eight players from their state championship team including four seniors, begin their 2015 volleyball regular season at T.C. Williams on Thursday, August 27th.
“I am grateful to my parents who are always there for me, for pushing me each day to be better and for supporting every decision that I make.“ When asked what advice she’d give others pursuing their dream, Twitty replied, “You can accomplish anything you want, but you have to be disciplined and maintain perseverance towards your goal.”
Please join us in wishing Lauren Twitty the best in her success on the court, and in pursuit of a degree in Biomedical/Chemical Engineering at the University of New Mexico.
