Ashburn, Va (March 21, 2015) – A March trip to South Carolina to compete in the Snowbird Tournament produced standout results for the No. 11 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) softball team.
The Marlins closed their portion of competition on Monday with a sterling pitching effort from senior Kristina Karagiorgis (Ashburn/Briar Woods), who pitched a no-hit, perfect game in a 3-0 win over the Arcadia University Knights. Junior Mary Shipp (Virginia Beach/First Colonial) started the day with a one-hitter against Rutgers University-Newark, leading the Marlins to a 10-0 decision.
Pitching was in the spotlight throughout the tournament for VWC (10-2). Karagiorgis picked up three wins with a no-hitter against St. Joseph’s College of Long Island, a one-hitter in the first game against Rutgers-Newark, and the no-hit, perfect game against Arcadia. Shipp improved to 5-0 with two wins, both one-hitters against the College of Old Westbury (N.Y.) and Rutgers-Newark, and sophomore Kasey Newcomb (Henderson, N.C./Creedmor South Granville) recorded her first win, a no-hitter, in a second game against Old Westbury.
The trio of pitchers combined to strike out 42 batters, helping the Marlins to finish 6-0 in the tournament. Karagiorgis recorded a season-high 13 strikeouts against Arcadia and faced only 21 batters in seven innings. She also struck out seven in a 15-0 win over Rutgers-Newark. Shipp fanned a total of five batters and Newcomb struck out six.
While pitching and defense combined to help Virginia Wesleyan to record six shutouts, consistent hitting catapulted the Marlins into leads in each contest. The Marlins pounded out 70 hits, including a high of 20 in the first win over Rutgers-Newark.
Junior Kayla Dost (Bristow/Nokesville Brentsville) led the efforts with the bats, finishing 11-of-17 for a hot. .647 batting average. She belted four doubles and finished with a team-high eight runs-batted-in. Junior Courtney Bogan (Round Hill/Woodgrove)was not far off that pace as she hit 11-of 19 for a .578 mark. Her hits included a triple against Rutgers-Newark.
Rookie Teresa Caradamone (Herndon/Chantilly)produced the Marlins’ first home run of the season, hitting it against Rutgers-Newark. She also connected for a pair of doubles and hit 7-of-14 overall. Sophomore Liz Bailey (Chesapeake/Greenbrier Christian) also hit .500 (5-of-10), with a double and triple, and rookies Cassety Howerin (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Sami Pearce (Powhatan/Powhatan) both finished with five hits each. Howerin’s total included a pair of doubles and a triple.
