Shippensburg University junior football placekicker Billy Deane was named Wednesday to the Fred Mitchell Award’s September Watch List.
The Fred Mitchell Award is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The award committee produces monthly Watch Lists before selecting a winner at the end of the football season.
Deane is one of 16 kickers (five from NCAA Division II) recognized for their performances during the first month of the season.
Through four games, Deane leads the Red Raiders in scoring with 36 points on 8-of-11 field goals and 12-of-12 PATs. He was named the PSAC Eastern Division Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 5 (3-of-4 FGs, 10 points at AIC) and Sept. 12 (2-of-2 FGs, 8 points vs. Gannon).
Deane is currently tied for second in NCAA Division II for field goals per game (2.0) and field-goal attempts (11). He is averaging 57.3 yards on 23 kickoffs.
Among volunteer and community-service activities for Deane include work at SHIP Shape Day, reading activities with local elementary school students, and community efforts at home in Virginia through both his church and a local homeless shelter.
