Richmond, VA (Mar. 7, 2016) – The Virginia Academy Patriots entered the VISAA Division III state tournament as the #5 seed, and defeated the #1 seeded Williamsburg Academy in semi-final action by the score 68-64. The Patriots then defeated the #2 seed, Amelia Academy by the score 54-51 in the state championship game at Virginia State University on Saturday, March 5th.
The Patriots play in the Beltway League which includes Riverdale Baptist, National Christian Academy, Capital Christian Academy, Middleburg Academy; and showcase games against DeMatha, Wakefield, and Battlefield; so they were well prepared for their state title run after competing against such stiff competition.
“The coaching staffed emphasized fundamentals, team defense, sharing the ball and trusting your teammates, said head basketball coach, Charles Bushrod. We played a challenging schedule featuring six of the top 20 teams in the DMV so we were well prepared.”
Virginia Academy was led on the court by 6’10” Ejike O’Binna and point guard Jahlil Jenkins. O’Binna scored 17 points and Jenkins 16 in the state championship game. With no seniors and only eight players on the active roster, the Patriots also relied heavily on freshman 6’11” Qudus Wahab to help anchor their help-side defense.
In just their third year as a high school and second season with a boys varsity basketball program, winning a state championship title sets a nice foundation for a promising future.
