We are starting something new called the “Senators Sunday” where once a week Chris Robinson of the Aldie Senators Valley Baseball League organizations takes a look at how the team fared in the past week and what they have upcoming for this week … here goes the first installment!
(June 23, 2013) – The Aldie Senators came rambling down I-81 and took the town of Staunton by storm last week!
The Staunton Braves came into the contest in first place in the Southern Division, nationally ranked, and widely recognized as the strongest team in the Valley Baseball League. That didn’t stop the Senators though as they knocked off the Braves, 10-2, behind an extremely strong offensive night from Travis Ferrick (5-6), and great pitching by Wofford College standout Luke Leftwich.
The Senators started off the game strong scoring two runs in the top of the first. Boston College third baseman Ferrick walked, and his college teammate, Jimmy Dowdell, smacked a 2-run home run to dead center field.
The Braves responded in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run rally, but that would be it for them for the rest of the game.
The Senators struck again in the top of the second, when Austin Wobrock hit an RBI single that scored St. Joseph’s University outfielder Chris Hueth, which made the score 3-2. The score would remain tied until Ferrick came up huge again in the top of the 4th — hitting a single that scored Le Moyne College second basemen Brett Charbonneau.
The Senators then had all the momentum, taking the large Staunton crowd out of the game.
University of Hawaii shortstop Austin Wobrock recorded an RBI single in the top of the 6th inning that scored Hueth. Wobrock was 3-for-6 with 2 RBI on the night. Seton Hill University outfielder and South Riding native Matt Malacane lead off the 7th with a hit by pitch. He eventually came around to score on a single by North Georgia College catcher Eason Spivey, who was a perfect 2-for-2.
The real damage came across in the top of the 8th inning, where the Senators found an onslaught of hits that helped them tally four runs; all with two outs.
Hits in the inning were recorded by Ferrick, Dowdell, St. Joseph’s College outfielder Charlie Dennehy, Hueth, and Spivey. Scoring runs in the 8th were Ferrick, Dowdell, Malacane, and Dennehy.
Big right hander Luke Leftwich did the rest for the Senators, putting down the Braves in order in the 8th, and only allowing one base runner in the 9th. Leftwich was undoubtedly the player of the game, throwing a complete game while only giving up five hits, three of which were in the first two innings.
Leftwich threw 8 scoreless innings after the first, and at one point retired 15 out of 16 Braves batters.
