Loudoun County, VA (October 5, 2015) – The Loudoun Academy of Science (AOS) presented lab coats to the 68 members of the Class of 2019 at a special ceremony held on Thursday, September 24th, in the Dominion High School auditorium.
The keynote speaker for the event was LCPS Chief of Staff Dr. Michael Richards.
Richards asked the students to go back with him 2,400 years to the origins of scientific thinking, to the world of the Golden Age of Macedonia and Greece. He described three parallels between the class of 2019 and the philosopher, Aristotle:
- “Aristotle was at the beginning of civilization’s journey into science and you are at the beginning of your journey into science.”
- “Aristotle listened and learned everything he could from his brilliant teacher, Plato. And he also learned to think for himself.”
- “Aristotle was never satisfied with the evidence before him and always sought new and innovative ways to explore the natural world.”
Richards ended with a quote from Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
The white coats were placed on the students by AOS faculty members and students in the Class of 2016. As students received the coats, they took the following pledge:
“Today, I make a commitment to my education and training as a student of the Academy of Science. I acknowledge my responsibility to continue the pursuit of knowledge throughout my life.
“My classmates at the Academy of Science are now my colleagues and I owe to them the same support and encouragement to achieve their goals as I hope to receive from them. I will work alongside my classmates and instructors with tolerance, compassion, and honesty.
“I acknowledge my obligation to adhere to the Academy of Science Honor Code and to conduct myself with integrity and in an ethical manner at all times. I shall do all within my power to show in myself an example of all that is honorable and good.
“I accept this coat as a symbol of reward for what I have achieved as well as a promise for my future.”
