Ashburn, VA (November 26, 2016) – When co-captain Allison Buffenbarger was sidelined with a high ankle sprain earlier this season, she was sorely missed by her Foxcroft School field hockey teammates. The senior midfielder is an impact player whose excellent stickhandling and passing helps steer the Foxcroft offense.
When she returned, Buffenbarger steered that offense to the Delaney Athletic Conference Championship with the game-winning goal in Foxcroft’s 1-0 victory over Fredericksburg Academy, the six-time defending champions. The goal earned the Leesburg, VA, resident Athlete of the Week honors for the period of Oct. 30-Nov. 5.
Buffenbarger’s importance to the team was made crystal clear during her absence. She missed four games, including a 2-1 loss to St. Anne’s-Belfield and a 1-1 tie with Carlisle. Had she played in those games, Coach Michelle Woodruff believes Foxcroft could have won both of them.
Since Buffenbarger’s return the team had gone on a 5-0-1 streak culminating in last Thursday’s title-winning victory – the first time Foxcroft had ever beaten FA, a six-time VISAA Division II state champion, for the DAC title. Buffenbarger scored, unassisted, with two minutes left in the first half and helped keep the Falcons off the board the rest of the way.
The win helped Foxcroft land a berth in the VISAA Division I state tournament — against top-seeded Trinity Christian. Foxcroft fell to Trinity Christian, 5-2, despite scoring twice against a team that had shut out 9 of its previous 10 opponents.
